The HIM Specialist performs abstracting of information from patient records. Ensure accuracy and integrity of the medical record data prior to billing. Maintains statistical information for inpatient units. Scans paper documents into the electronic medical record. Processes release of information requests. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Forwards monthly statistical reports to specific departments, administration and the director by the 10th day of each month.
  • Maintains EHR documentation.
  • Prepares medical records for performance improvement studies and service committees, meeting established deadlines.
  • Assures that charts are abstracted within 3 days of patient's discharge.
  • Pulls requested medical records within time specified. Abstracts information from medical records by keying the information into the computer census abstract system, maintaining a 100% accuracy rate.
  • Assumes responsibility for cross-checking quality, accuracy and completeness of abstracts.
  • Assists in answering the telephones and taking accurate messages.
  • Assists in retrieving charts for physician completion, when necessary.
  • Performs performance improvement functions through data collection and documentation review.
  • Is familiar with pediatric and SNF charting requirements.
  • Must be familiar with the following manuals: Administration, Health Information Management Services, Emergency Management and Safety.
  • Maintains hospital requirements, policies and standards on confidentiality.
  • Process release of information according to Parkside policy, and Oklahoma law.
  • Maintain education regarding HIPAA compliance and standards.
  • Maintains fit for duty. Acts in a professional manner and follows all of Parkside policies and procedures.
  • Orients new staff members to the department.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be organized and flexible, acts appropriately in stressful/emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school Diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) plus years experience working inpatient in a similar role
  • ROI Specialist Certification a plus

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Basic computer knowledge
