Nursery Supervisor (Project Management)
Provides coordination of production processes and business activities of the forest seedling nursery to assure production targets for container and/or bare root conifer seedlings are met.
Supervises the Korbel Nursery with frequent intra and inter-departmental communications with coordinators/technicians, and delegation of responsibility to these employees for specified goals.
Assists in directing nursery operations to include cultural treatment, achievement of production targets, maintaining inventory records, budget planning for management approval, records on outside sales, administers contracts and coordinates other maintenance and housekeeping duties necessary to operate.
Exercises administrative controls to influence operational goals of achieving high quality seedling crops.
Observes and diagnoses, early and accurately, the causal agents that reduce crop vigor and quality, such as diseases and insect pests, then prescribes and administers remedial treatments.
Integrates the genetic improvements provided by the Tree Improvement Program into seedling production operations.
Oversees the Korbel Nursery and assures the optimum seedling specifications for each crop.
Assists in coordinating the research and production activities between Tree Improvement activities, Tissue Culture Lab and Nursery.
Coordinates the activities of tree improvement and greenhouse space for redwood plantlet production through the harvesting season.
Assists in status reviews, periodic meetings, and other means of communication to keep the Silviculture Investments Manager informed in the progress of each operating unit throughout the year.
Maintains knowledge of "state of art" practices and current thinking regarding seedling production by attending nursery seminars, meetings, site visits to public and private nurseries, and correspondence with other growers.
Assures greenhouses and machinery used for seedling preparation are in good working order and properly maintained.
Meets with local, regional, national and international public groups for onsite tours to disclose to visitors and address the company's view of forest regeneration. May be called on to travel for meetings of this nature in other areas in the Pacific Northwest.
Assists in administration of operational budgets, capitalized and expensed purchases, labor costs and other financial activities related to planned expenditures in each of the operating units under the position's jurisdiction.
Communicates company policies, management objectives, and program goals to employees.
Manages, educates and supports direct reports through the employee life cycle.
Provides personnel training, safety, interaction with accounting and payroll, and dealings with contractors and clients.
Communicates to reach agreement and potential solutions to routine job challenges through flexibility and compromise with supervisor, peers, direct reports and crew to resolve issues.
Assists in performing productive performance reviews (both written and verbal), for staff, according to program guidelines.
Assures a safe workplace. Takes personal initiative and an active responsibility to insure ongoing safe behaviors through implementation and active participation in the company safety program with a goal of no recordable accidents. Develops, implements, and facilitates safety elements to support the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP).
Must be willing to accept responsibility, demonstrate sound approaches to problem solving, and proficiency with necessary accounting functions (maintaining detailed inventories, invoicing, cost accounting, etc.).
Ability to effectively coordinate the technology transfer between the research staff in Tissue Culture and Tree Improvement to take advantage of improvements in lab techniques for tissue culturing and to add genetically improved redwood to the company's long term reforestation program.
Ability to communicate to operating units the role that research and seedling production makes to the mission of timberlands in California.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
B.S. degree in Horticulture, Plant/Crop Sciences, Forestry or related field.
Certified pesticide applicators license or qualifications and willingness to pursue PCA
Valid California driver's license.
Three years supervisory and nursery management in reforestation (woody) seedlings.
Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of applications, or equivalent software.

Desired:
Advanced degree with an academic minor in genetics, plant physiology, biochemistry, soil microbiology or other supporting plant science.
Strong background in accounting/business administration.
Knowledge and experience working with pesticides and fertilizers common to nursery production.
Broad interest and understanding in areas of business, plant biology, mechanics and maintenance, genetics, personnel relationships, contract administration, safety relations.
Working knowledge and experience with tree improvement, silviculture, seed orchard and/or tree breeding and genetics.
Good mechanical aptitude with nursery equipment, irrigation system(s), building maintenance, etc.
Excellent computer and record-keeping skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position is located in Korbel, CA.
Nursery/Laboratory environment with moderate noise levels, occasional lifting, regular walking, sitting, bending, twisting, standing and reaching.
Ability to tour logging operations, attend training and company functions.
Ability to perform consistent work on a PC.
Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.
Occasional travel to various locations throughout the Pacific Northwest requiring a vehicle and ability to drive.
Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with GDRCo.
This position may be exposed to various pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, nematodes, insecticides, fertilizers and bleaching agents. Use of respirator is required.
