Deputy Director of Photography, San Francisco Chronicle
The San Francisco Chronicle newsroom has an immediate opening for an energetic, versatile, creative photo editor with a talent for producing top-quality work under the constant deadline pressure of today's news business. In partnership with the Director of Photography, this person will help lead daily operations to ensure the production of informative and engaging photographs and videos that enhance the visual quality of our digital and print platforms.
What you will do:
Edit incoming visual content for quality, accuracy and relevance across platforms.
Coordinate scheduling and logistics for major events and breaking news.
Collaborate across departments to ensure high quality from the daily photo report.
Manage and coach visual journalists.
Establish a tone and style for the photo and video coverage of our features sections.
Generate daily and long-term story ideas.
Build visual essays and other visual first narratives.
Teach visual literacy skills and best visual practices to the newsroom.
What it will take to be successful:
A strong online photo editing portfolio that demonstrates visual sophistication and excellence in digital and print presentation.
Smart news judgment and story pitches.
Sense of urgency and the ambition to win the 24/7 news cycle.
Ability to work effectively under deadline pressure.
Knowledge of the Bay Area is preferred.
Understanding of social media to effectively promote work and the work of colleagues.
Adherence to journalistic ethics.
Knowledge of communication law as it applies to photography.
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with all levels of employees in the workplace.
Working knowledge of photo software programs such as Photoshop, Final Cut and Photo Mechanic.
A passion for journalism that elevates and motives others.
Requirements:
This position will be scheduled 40 hours per week.
Some weekend, evening and holiday work will be required.
A minimum of 5 years of photography experience with news organizations.
Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, photography, video or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
