Job Description:
Job Purpose
This position is accountable for providing the leadership in combustion technologies and additive manufacturing deployment to meet the requirements of Solar's current and future core products and expansion products.
DIMENSIONS:
Supervises and integrates the efforts of five group manager, approximately fifty direct professionals and five non-exempt technician reports.
Manages to an annual department budget of approximately $12.0M.
Funding from external sources can range between $200K - $1M per year.
Responsible for R&E of $5-$12M
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The development and readiness of suitable Combustion and Additive Manufacturing technologies and Combustion system components are accomplished at the direction of the Manager, Combustion Engineering and Additive Technology through the timely and effective performance of development efforts; strong interactions with other Engineering groups and Manufacturing to ensure minimum lead times of new products; and regular information exchanges with Marketing.
The external environment for Solar's product line are markets that are characterized by increasingly restrictive emissions regulations that do not demonstrate any tendency for near term maturity. Solar, therefore, must be dedicated to a program of continuous emissions reduction for the foreseeable future in order to maintain and expand market share in a highly-competitive and technically-sophisticated arena.
The Manager, Combustion Engineering and Additive Manufacturing reports to the Director, NPI and Technology and has five group manager subordinates. The five group managers supervise activities centered around Emissions Support, Standard Product Support, Transition Product Support; Advanced Technology, Additive Manufacturing and Design and Test Support. Other members of the professional staff are assigned to activities within the influence of one or more of the group managers.
The Manager, Combustion Engineering and Additive Manufacturing must respond to the short term, sometimes emergency, demands of the standard product with field problem resolution, but in addition must plan for technology preparedness in areas that are as far ahead as 10 years or more. This requires a range of appropriately qualified professionals and close coordination with the group chiefs to enable the communications to flow efficiently upwards to the Director and V.P. of Turbomachinery Products (TMP).
The Manager, Combustion Engineering and Additive Manufacturing has strong general product knowledge at the engineering level and a background in the experimental and analytical design and development of combustion systems including the evaluation of fuels. Communication skills are paramount due to the extensive contacts with external customer; regulatory; and sponsoring organizations.
