We are currently looking for a Principal Manufacturing Engineer to join our Cranial and Spinal Technologies (CST) Operating Unit, committed to transforming patient care through groundbreaking innovations in neurosurgery and spinal procedures. Location: This position will be based at our Carlsbad, California location with the expectation of working three days onsite minimum.

Careers That Change Lives

In this exciting role, you will provide critical manufacturing engineering expertise to Spine product development teams with an emphasis on New Product launches. Assess drawings and other design output to identify potential manufacturing, assembly and inspection challenges along with proposing alternate solutions. Activities include review, feedback and approval of design changes, print updates, suitability of manufacturing and inspection equipment, use of PLM tools to process change requests, approval of instrument and implant rework requests, product transfers, support all aspects of manufacturing operations, CAPA mitigation, and assist Supply Chain in backorder resolution.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Manage technical aspects of product and process transfer to manufacturing partners.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to Manufacturer for engineering issues.
  • Conduct, coordinate and aid in formal Process Validations/Qualifications including protocol development and execution.
  • Collaborate on MSA activities to meet design requirements and business needs.
  • Ensure manufacturing processes have adequately demonstrated specified process capabilities through being the Champion for PFMEA, Design for Manufacturability, Demand Flow Technology, and Design for Six Sigma.
  • Work as a liaison with the Manufacturer to ensure design for manufacturing elements are incorporated to improve yield and reduce costs.
  • Provide guidance to Manufacturer as it relates to the design and assist in the evaluation of new and existing fixtures and equipment, test methods, specifications, layouts, and standards supporting a Lean manufacturing environment.
  • Approve and manage design changes and process changes for adherence to Medtronic requirements.
  • Ability to meet at off hours to support Manufacturers located across the globe with global time zone differences.
  • Ensure adherence to product specifications, industry standards, and quality and regulatory procedures and requirements. Ensure personal understanding of all quality policy/system items that are personally applicable. Follow all work/quality procedures to ensure quality system compliance and high-quality work.
  • Assist with selection and qualification of new materials and suppliers

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or advanced degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have: Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with and effective application of Design for Inspection, Validation Protocol and Report creation, SPC, Process Control Plans, MSA, GR&R, Gauging applications, Gauge design, and Gauge construction, Sampling methodologies, Data Analysis, VAVE, and IQ/OQ/PQ
  • Medical device related experience with and understanding of Machining, Molding, Grinding, Forming, Assembly, Welding, Finishing, Cleaning, Passivating, Anodizing, Shot Peening, Mass Media Operations, Coatings, EDM, Casting, Forging, Polishing.
  • Experience with metal 3D printing equipment, process and technologies in medical applications.
  • Experience with Design Verification and Validation activities
  • Experience working with a diverse group of people both within the organization as well as with people outside the company.
  • PMP Certification
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$120,800.00 - $181,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance , Health Savings Account , Healthcare Flexible Spending Account , Life insurance, Long-term disability leave , Dependent daycare spending account , Tuition assistance/reimbursement , and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
