Responsibilities

Commute Connector

What you'll be challenged to do:

TranSystems (a national architecture, engineering, and planning transportation consulting firm) in partnership with the Commute Connector Program (a program of the Florida Department of Transportation) is seeking an Outreach Specialist to assist in the operation and expansion of the Program. The Outreach Specialist will focus on community outreach efforts in the Southwest Florida region to aid in the behavior change of the travelling public to facilitate growth in alternative commute modes (vanpool, carpool, transit, biking, cycling, etc.). The primary role of the Outreach Specialist is to aid in the implementation and maintenance of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies related to employer and commuter outreach.  The Outreach Specialist will report to the Program Manager and will be part of a small and focused team.

Commute Connector is a program of the Florida Department of Transportation serving Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Lee, Manatee, Okeechobee, Polk and Sarasota counties in Southwest Florida.

 

Location: Southwest Florida. The ability to travel throughout Southwest Florida is required and travel expense reimbursement is provided.   

General Duties & Responsibilities include the following: 

  • Coordinate and implement outreach and sales activities with internal and external stakeholders, local transit operators, government agencies, employers and employees, and various other partner organizations to implement commute alternative programs (carpool, transit, biking, walking, teleworking, etc.).
  • Engage with employers and commuters in-person and virtually to build relationships and participation in the Commute Connector Program.
  • Facilitate and support the formation and continuation of new and existing carpools and vanpools in partnership with Program vendors.
  • Develop new and innovative approaches and marketing campaigns.
  • Document and maintain accurate records and contact lists.
  • Attend, staff, and/or present at meetings, events, and presentations.
  • Track Program progress against goals and performance metrics.
  • Provide input to regional plans and programs that affect employer services and outreach.
  • Coordinate with other team members and partners to ensure that a high quality of outreach and engagement is always provided.
  • Work collaboratively with regional partners to accurately and successfully market partner products and services.
  • Participate in internal team strategy meetings to assess engagement activity, improve ongoing effectiveness, and develop/meet individual and team goals.
  • Answer incoming Program inquiries and phone calls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.


Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:

  • Minimum of one year experience in one or a combination of the following: community outreach, public relations, business development, sales, marketing, or a related field.
  • Strong capability with public speaking, presenting, and professional interactions.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License.
  • This position requires knowledge of sales, communications, marketing, outreach, and public speaking. Knowledge of, and experience with, Transportation Demand Management (TDM), transit, transportation, or other public services is preferred, but not required as training is offered.
  • Communication skills, including strong writing and presentation skills, are a requirement of this position. The ability to explain complex data and topics in plain language is important. 
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to work within a collaborative team environment. An ability to work across diverse departments and disciplines with respect, tact, and professionalism is required.  Successful candidates should also demonstrate their ability to be thoughtful, flexible, conscientious, organized, creative and passionate. 
  • This position requires local travel within a 12-county territory in Southwest Florida; with reliable transportation, (mileage is eligible for reimbursement).
  • Knowledge of effective sales strategies and techniques, including promotional campaigns and materials; practices involved in effective office administration and coordination of projects; engagement campaigns that are designed to generate public interest.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and complete assignments with tight deadlines.  Developing outlines and implementation plans; planning, developing, and implementing promotional programs; stimulating public interest and enthusiasm through the development of various outreach programs and campaigns; and establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships. 
  • Exceptional communication, both written and verbal. Exercise independent judgment. 
  • Competent in computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
  • Availability for occasional after-hour events and activities is required.
  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

  • Associates degree in Business, Communications, Marketing, or related field is preferred.
