The Urban Institute
Senior Fellow (Labor, Human Services and Population) (Biotech)
At the nonprofit Urban Institute, we believe in the power of evidence to improve lives and strengthen communities. Our employees are empowered to influence open minds, shape decisions and offer solutions. We encourage intellectual honesty, innovation, diversity, and mutual respect, and our analysis elevates the debate, wherever it takes place.
The Center on Labor, Human Services, and Population (LHP) seeks an accomplished intellectual and entrepreneurial leader who can frame and direct new knowledge-building initiatives that address 21st century challenges; contribute to research and policy analysis of lasting impact; build new partnerships with policymakers and practitioners; raise the visibility and impact of the Center's findings and insights; and actively participate in fundraising from philanthropic, corporate, and government.
The LHP agenda focuses on how changing labor markets, demographics, and economic inequality affect child, youth, and family well-being, and how policies and programs can improve economic security. With a staff of 45 (including researchers, policy analysts, and managers), the Center is committed to advancing evidence-based policies and programs that can improve economic security, human capital, family stability, and child development. Understanding how families are faring in the face of economic pressures and demographic change is essential for policymakers and practitioners who oversee social services and programs. Our research explores the implications of these changes for people and policies and contributes to the evolving conversation about growing inequality.
We are looking for leaders with strong expertise and experience in one or more of the following issue areas, and a commitment to knowledge-building, engagement, and impact.
Jobs, Wages, and Economic Growth – including policies aimed at promoting more inclusive economic growth at the community, regional, and national levels. Key issues include the changing nature of work; sectoral and geographic shifts in job creation; workers left behind by the economic recovery; marginalized groups; the benefits, costs, and efficacy of policies to increase demand for workers; and broader implications for healthy economic growth, economic mobility, and shared prosperity.
Immigrants and Immigration – including the role immigrants play in the economy, the challenges immigrants face in different communities and immigrants' access to the social safety net. Urban wants to develop and assess strategies for better connecting low-income immigrant families to vital support such as human services programs and nonprofit providers, and to learn how to make those systems work better for immigrant families, particularly those with language barriers or undocumented status.
