MAJOR FUNCTIONS
This is highly skilled mechanical work in repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered construction and related public works and other City equipment. This position is focused on diesel, CNG, and heavy equipment maintenance. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair, overhaul and rebuild a variety of construction and maintenance equipment. Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair and perform maintenance on trash trucks, garbage trucks, trailers, fire trucks, police cars, heavy duty equipment, etc.
Overhaul and service assemblies, sub-assemblies and accessories, such as single and two speed rear axles, multi-speed transmissions, hydraulic systems, compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components.
Repair and overhauls trucks, tractors, air compressors, diesel generators and other heavy engineering equipment.
Perform tests to locate defects in operation and evaluate repairs before returning equipment to service.
Repair and / or replace tires.
Identify, research and order required parts.
Perform all related tasks and duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of construction, design, repair and adjustment of gasoline and diesel engines and of the common types of construction and automotive equipment.
Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for repairs of gas driven motors and diesel powered construction equipment, to include handheld scan tools.
Knowledge of hydraulic systems, especially those employed in diesel powered construction equipment.
Knowledge of both light and heavy duty electrical systems in regard to their role in the proper functioning of engineering equipment.
Knowledge of the principles of operation of diesel fueled and gasoline internal combustion engines.
Highly competent in diagnosing defects and failures of gasoline vehicles, diesel and compressed natural gas powered heavy equipment.
Ability to read and comprehend technical schematics used to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical and hydraulic issues.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Must be able to communicate effectively with shop manager and customers regarding work performed
Highly competent in performing metal fabrication and welding.
Must be able to provide your own basic tools. Specialty tools are provided. Uniforms will be provided after successful completion of 90 days.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Five (5) years of experience in repairing and servicing automotive and heavy equipment.
Valid FL Driver's License.
Current ASE certification(s) (A1 - A9) or (T1 - T8) preferred.
A comparable amount of formal training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
